Il Grechetto (Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione)
St. Francis in Ecstasy

Circa 1650
Oil on canvas
Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession # 2014.270

St. Francis of Assisi is pictured as usual: the brown habit, the rope cincture with three knots, and the stigmatum on his hand. The skull, cross, and mountainous setting are taken from the iconography of hermit saints such as Rosalia of Palermo or Mary Magdalene in her final years.
